Distinguished Senator Henry Seriake Dickson is the National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), a lawyer, statesman, former Governor of Bayelsa State, and Senator representing Bayelsa West Senatorial District.

Born on 28 January 1966 in Toru-Orua, Sagbama Local Government Area of present-day Bayelsa State, Senator Dickson's career has spanned law, public administration, legislative service, and executive government. He has served at the state and federal levels, including as Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Bayelsa State, a two-term member of the House of Representatives, Governor of Bayelsa State, and Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Early Life and Education

Senator Dickson began his education at Kolobiriowei Primary School in Toru-Orua before attending Government Secondary School, Toru-Ebeni. He proceeded to the Rivers State University of Science and Technology in Port Harcourt, where he studied Law and obtained his LL.B. in 1992.

He subsequently attended the Nigerian Law School in Lagos, obtained his Bachelor of Laws (B.L.), and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1993.

Before entering full-time legal practice, Dickson joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1986. Following his legal education, he underwent police officer training and was appointed a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police in 1994 before leaving the force to pursue a career in law.

Legal Career

After leaving the police, Dickson began private legal practice, working as an associate solicitor at Serena David-Dokubo & Co. and subsequently at Aluko & Oyebode in Lagos.

In 1996, he established his own law firm, Seriake Dickson & Co., with offices in Port Harcourt and later Yenagoa. During this period, he also served as the pioneer Publicity Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association in Yenagoa.

His legal career provided the foundation for his later work in public administration and legislative reform, particularly in the areas of justice, constitutional affairs, electoral matters, and institutional governance.

Entry into Politics

Senator Dickson entered partisan politics through the Alliance for Democracy (AD). He served as Chairman of the party's Bayelsa State chapter from 1998 to 2000 and subsequently served as the party's National Legal Adviser from 2000 to 2002.

In 2006, he was appointed Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Bayelsa State by then-Governor Goodluck Jonathan. During his tenure, he served in a number of important legal and judicial institutions, including the Council of Legal Education and the state's judicial service structures.

Legislative Service

In 2007, Dickson was elected to the House of Representatives to represent the Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency of Bayelsa State. He was appointed Chairman of the House Committee on Justice and served on committees covering areas including defence, national security, intelligence, and foreign affairs.

He was re-elected in 2011 and subsequently served as Chairman of the House Committee on Special Duties. During his time in the National Assembly, he was involved in legislative initiatives covering justice, electoral reform, anti-corruption, constitutional reform, freedom of information, and national security.

Governor of Bayelsa State

In February 2012, Dickson became Governor of Bayelsa State. He was re-elected in 2015 and served two consecutive terms, leaving office in February 2020. He was the first governor of Bayelsa State to complete two full elected terms.

His administration placed particular emphasis on education, healthcare, infrastructure, institutional reform, and public administration. His administration's reported initiatives included investments in schools and scholarships, the Bayelsa State Health Insurance Scheme, healthcare infrastructure, roads and bridges, and the development of the Bayelsa International Airport.

Return to the Senate

Following his tenure as Governor, Dickson returned to federal legislative service. He won the Bayelsa West Senatorial District by-election in December 2020 and was sworn into the Ninth Senate.

He subsequently won re-election in 2023 and continued in the Tenth National Assembly. In August 2023, he was appointed Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, reflecting his longstanding involvement in Niger Delta and environmental issues.

In May 2023, he was conferred with the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).

In March 2026, Senator Dickson left the Peoples Democratic Party and joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress, where he assumed the position of National Leader.

As National Leader, he has become one of the principal figures associated with the NDC's development and preparations for the 2027 general elections. Recent reporting has documented his involvement in party organisation, candidate selection, engagement with party stakeholders, and the development of the party's national and Diaspora structures.
